Implications

Agent-IDE feature race. Composer’s beta launch is the historical origin point for what becomes Cursor’s defining feature. At this moment (July 2024), multi-file AI editing was the frontier capability — Aider was the main CLI competitor doing it, and GitHub Copilot was still primarily single-file. Cursor entering this space as an IDE-native feature rather than a patch-apply CLI was a category bet that has since defined the market.

Watch (retrospectively): The trajectory from beta Composer (0.37) to Composer 2 with proprietary model pricing (2026) illustrates how quickly an “experimental” feature can become the core value proposition and eventually the model distribution layer.
