Summary
Cursor 0.47.x adds Claude 3.7 Sonnet MAX mode support with and without thinking (thinking costs 2 requests instead of 1), global MCP server configuration via ~/.cursor/mcp.json, nested .cursor/rules directories, multiple image uploads in chat, and auto-select model behavior during provider outages. New themes (Cursor Dark, Midnight, High Contrast) and centralized keyboard shortcut management ship alongside 11 stability patches.
Implications
Model integration cadence. Claude 3.7 Sonnet MAX with thinking is a meaningful addition — it’s the first time extended thinking (slow, expensive) is surfaced as an explicit Cursor mode rather than hidden behavior. Pricing at 2 requests per thinking call is a clever meter: it keeps thinking behind a soft cost gate without requiring separate SKUs. This model launches as Anthropic pushes thinking as a frontier differentiator.
MCP/protocol adoption. Global MCP config at ~/.cursor/mcp.json is a usability unlock — previously, MCP server setup was per-project. Global config means power users can maintain a personal MCP toolkit that follows them across repos, bringing Cursor’s MCP DX closer to Claude Code’s global tool setup.
Watch: Whether the “auto select model” during outages becomes a transparent fallback (users see which model was selected) or a silent degradation — transparency matters for billing trust.
