Rules generation, improved agent terminal and MCP images

Source: Cursor Date: 2025-04-15 URL: https://cursor.com/changelog/0-49

Summary

Cursor 0.49 adds /Generate Cursor Rules to create rules from conversations, auto-attached rules by file path patterns, MCP image support (screenshots, UI mocks, diagrams as context), project structure in context beta for monorepo navigation, and a built-in diff view for code review. Models added: Gemini 2.5 Pro/Flash, Grok 3/3 Mini, GPT-4.1, o3, o4-mini.

Implications

Agent-IDE feature race. /Generate Cursor Rules from conversations is a workflow innovation — rather than manually authoring rules, the agent synthesizes project conventions from the conversation. Combined with auto-attachment by file path, rules become a living convention system that emerges from usage rather than being pre-specified. This is more dynamic than Claude Code’s static CLAUDE.md.

Model integration cadence. Adding Grok 3/3 Mini alongside OpenAI (GPT-4.1, o3, o4-mini) and Google (Gemini 2.5 Pro/Flash) in one release signals Cursor has operationalized multi-provider routing at scale. Five new models in a single release is the highest model integration velocity in Cursor’s changelog — suggests model routing is now a solved infrastructure problem rather than a careful integration.

MCP/protocol adoption. MCP image support (screenshots, diagrams as server-provided context) significantly expands MCP’s utility for UI agents and design tooling. A design tool MCP that passes Figma mockups directly to the agent as context is now possible without workarounds.
