Claude in Amazon Bedrock: Approved for Use in FedRAMP High and DoD IL4/5 Workloads

Source: Anthropic Date: 2025-06-11 URL: https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-in-amazon-bedrock-fedramp-high

Summary

Claude models (3.5 Sonnet v1, Claude 3 Haiku) in Amazon Bedrock received FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Level 4/5 authorization in AWS GovCloud regions. Enabled features: Bedrock Agents, Guardrails, Knowledge Bases, Model Evaluation. Eligible customers: federal agencies, defense organizations, defense contractors, approved government partners. 200K token context window. Future models (Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Claude 4) planned for addition.

Implications

  • Enterprise / government procurement unlock. FedRAMP High + DoD IL4/5 is the full federal authorization stack — it covers sensitive unclassified (FedRAMP High) and controlled unclassified information (DoD IL4/5) workloads. This opens procurement to every US federal agency and all defense contractors.
  • AWS GovCloud as the delivery mechanism. The authorization routes through Amazon Bedrock in GovCloud — not through Anthropic’s direct API. This means the government market is an AWS channel business, not a direct Anthropic relationship. The revenue attribution goes through Amazon.
  • 200K context for government use cases. Explicitly highlighting the context window for “comprehensive analysis of large datasets” in the federal announcement is the government document processing positioning — intelligence analysis, legal review, policy documents.
  • Timing relative to GSA Schedule. The FedRAMP High authorization (June 2025) preceded the GSA Schedule listing (August 2025) — the authorization is the prerequisite for procurement vehicle access.
  • Watch: which specific federal agencies deployed Claude after the authorization; how quickly the next-generation models (Claude 4) received FedRAMP authorization; whether the GovCloud-only constraint remained or direct-API authorization was sought.
