Summary
Anthropic Labs launched Claude Design on April 17, a research preview that creates designs, prototypes, slides, and one-pagers from conversation. Powered by Opus 4.7. Reads codebase and design files during onboarding to build an organizational design system. Exports to Canva, PDF, PPTX, standalone HTML, and — critically — a handoff bundle for Claude Code.
Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger resigned from Figma’s board on April 14, three days before launch. Figma stock dropped 7% on the announcement.
Implications
Anthropic is no longer a model company or even an agent company. With Claude Design + Claude Code + Managed Agents + Claude for Word + Conway, they have five product surfaces from one model provider. The design-to-code handoff bundle is the integration that makes the vertical seamless.
The competitive threat to Figma is expansion of the design user base to non-designers, not replacement of professional designers. Figma’s “Code to Canvas” (February) tried to pull Claude Code output into Figma. Anthropic built the pipeline in-house instead.
