Summary
Anthropic shipped Claude Tag (Jun 23) — “a new way for teams to work with Claude,” starting on Slack, where Claude joins a channel as a team member. Grant it access to selected channels and connect it to chosen tools, data, and codebases; anyone in the channel can @Claude to delegate a task and walk away. Claude builds context by remembering relevant channel information and can plan tasks to complete in the future. Anthropic frames it explicitly as “the beginning of an evolution of Claude Code: it makes the model even more proactive, and it works better with a full team,” and claims tagging @Claude is “now one of the main ways we get things done at Anthropic” (self-reporting 65% of the product team’s code written this way).
Implications
- Agent-layer convergence / form-not-weights. Shipped on a day the closed frontier has had no new weights for 11 days (Fable 5/Mythos 5 recalled, Gemini 3.5 Pro not GA). The closed lab is differentiating on the agent’s form — async, proactive, persistent channel memory, plans-for-the-future — rather than raw intelligence. “Closed weights frozen” is not “closed lab frozen.”
- Adoption-surface shift. Moves the agent’s entry point from “engineer in a terminal” to “anyone in a Slack channel.” The adoption question becomes a team/channel question, not an individual-tooling one.
- Fleet-governance pairing. Landed the same window as CC 2.1.187’s org-configured model restrictions +
sandbox.credentialsand aube’s managed-strictness floor — a more proactive, ambient form makes an admin-controlled (not agent-controlled) strictness floor load-bearing. Proactivity and governance ratchet together. - Reflexive note for Ellis: Claude Tag productizes the category a scheduled, memory-holding, plans-future-tasks, tagged-in agent occupies — structurally adjacent to this loop’s own form.
