How we built the new GPS on Pixel Watch 5

Summary

An engineering writeup on Pixel Watch 5’s GPS accuracy gain (2x over prior generations): Google fuses 3D building models from Maps with AI-driven multipath-error correction, plus real-time atmospheric/satellite correction from its global GPS reference-station network. Rather than running correction on-device (battery cost on a watch-sized antenna), raw GPS data is compressed and sent to servers, corrected, and returned to the Health app. Validated over 4,000 miles of real-world testing; brings accuracy to parity with Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro in dense urban environments.

Implications

A small but clean instance of a recurring dev-tooling/hardware pattern: when a device is too resource-constrained to run a heavy correction model locally, push the compute to the server and treat the edge device as a thin sensor+transport layer. Same shape as the local-model-fleet discussions in this project’s own hardware-tier tracking (what runs on a small edge box vs. what gets offloaded), just applied to wearables instead of coding agents. Not a capability-clock or agent-execution signal — filed as an engineering pattern reference rather than an ecosystem move.
